David Brain

David Brain formerly served as the President and Chief Executive Officer as well as a Board Member/Trustee of EPR Properties a NYSE traded real estate investment trust (NYSE: EPR) with a market capitalization of more than $5B as of Q1 2015.  David co-founded EPR in 1997 and served as its original Chief Financial Officer. He was named CEO in September of 1999.

                                     

EPR is a specialty real estate investment trust (REIT) investing in properties in select categories which require unique industry knowledge, while offering the potential for stable and attractive returns.  The Company’s total assets exceed $4 billion and include megaplex movie theatres and adjacent retail, public charter schools, and other destination recreational and specialty investments.

 

Previously, David was a Senior Vice President in the Investment Banking department of George K. Baum & Company.  Before joining George K. Baum & Company, David was Managing Director of the Corporate Finance group in the Kansas City office of KPMG Peat Marwick. 

 

David has broad experience in financial transaction assistance, ranging from corporate acquisitions and divestitures to project feasibility analyses as well as business valuation matters. Besides his corporate finance experience, he has appeared numerous times as an expert witness in Federal and State courts regarding valuation matters.  He has also made several appearances as a guest commentator on television networks such as CNBC and CNNfn.

 

He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics with honors from Tulane University, where he was also named Phi Beta Kappa, and a Masters of Business Administration from the A. B. Freeman Graduate Business School at Tulane University.

 

David currently serves as a Trustee/Board Member for two Real Estate Investment Trusts; American Residential Properties (ARPI) and Maxus Realty Trust (MRTI).  These REITs invest in single family and multi-family residential properties, respectively.  David also currently serves as a director for the Kansas City, Missouri Community Development Entity (CDE) which is one of the most active New Market Tax Credit intermediaries in the Kansas City area. 

 

David has received numerous honors throughout his career, including an appointment to the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trust’s Board of Governors. He has also served as a board member for Capital for Entrepreneurs, Inc., a venture capital fund, the Center for Business Innovation, Inc., a not-for-profit small business incubator located on the campus of the University of Missouri at Kansas City, and the Council for Entrepreneurship at the University of Missouri at Kansas City. He has also received the Innovator of the Year award from the University of Wisconsin’s Real Estate program.

 

David was awarded the 2011 Ernst & Young Master Entrepreneur of the Year for the Central Midwest region, an honor which is reserved for those who inspire others with their vision, leadership and achievement, placing David among a prestigious group of leading entrepreneurs and community-conscious innovators.
